The Wall Street Journal has up a fascinating and illuminating graphic on the Chinese diaspora. This graphic depicts where Chinese have settled around the world. I knew Peru had a lot of Chinese, but would never have guessed 1.3 million. I also knew Thailand and Indonesia had a ton of Chinese, but surprised they each have more than 7 million.

GUYANA DIASPORA PROJECT
Guyana’s Diaspora (GUYD) Project is a project implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the IOM Guyana Office. The project seeks to engage Guyanese Diaspora by documenting skills, resources and the return interest and plans of those willing to support the development..
The overall objective of the GUYD project is to contribute to the economic development of Guyana through the support and engagement of the Guyanese diaspora. The information obtained from the GUYD Project will act as an important indicator as to what skills and resources exist in the Diaspora and the interest of the Diaspora, which will serve as important factors guiding Government policy to engage the Diaspora.
Guyana Diaspora
The history of increased migration from Guyana to other parts of the world started as early as the 1960’s due to the unstable economic conditions which prevailed during that period. Over the years, the migrant Guyanese population has increased, reducing much needed skills to support development within many sectors. As migration trends increase so has the desire of the diaspora to maintain a sense of identity, a connection to their place of origin and to contribute to the development of their home country.
Through a mapping exercise, the project sets out to acquire information on the number of persons, organizations and associations that constitute the diaspora; which regions/countries they can be found and most importantly, what skills they may posses and are willing to share for the development of their homeland.

GOED BESTUUR IN DE WEST
- Wat maakt dat de kwaliteit van het openbaar bestuur in de Caribische delen van het Koninkrijk zo achterblijft bij de Nederlandse verwachtingen? Om antwoord te geven op deze vraag analyseert Oberon NAUTA in zijn proefschrift over goed bestuur in de Caribische rijksdelen, de relatie tussen de wijze waarop in formele zin goed bestuur gewaarborgd wordt en de maatschappelijke karakteristieken van de eilanden in de West. De uitkomsten van deze analyse stemmen niet onverdeeld positief: tussen de Nederlandse gedragsnormen die in de wet- en regelgeving van de Caribische rijksdelen gecodificeerd zijn en de sociaal-culturele kenmerken van de eilanden bestaat een mismatch die goed bestuur ernstig belemmert. De auteur laat echter ook zien dat deze mismatch kan worden verholpen door de wet- en regelgeving aan de Caribische context aan te passen. Hoe dat precies in zijn werk gaat wordt geïllustreerd aan de hand van Anguilla en Barbados. Volgens Nauta houdt de op Nederland geënte wet- en regelgeving geen rekening met de Caribische werkelijkheid,’. ‘Er bestaat een discrepantie tussen de geest van de wet en de norm van de samenleving. Zo zorgt de kleinschaligheid van de eilanden voor belangenverstrengeling bij bestuurders. Het blijkt voor hen vaak lastig privé en zakelijke relaties te scheiden. Ook kennen de eilanden een grote arme onderklasse die afhankelijk is van hulp van de overheid. Omdat politici over het verstrekken van die hulp beslissen, beschikken zij over de mogelijkheid banen en uitkeringen te ruilen voor electorale steun. Bestuurders die onrechtmatig handelen door bepaalde groepen te bevoorrechten worden vaak niet electoraal afgestraft omdat hun gedrag in lijn is met de heersende maatschappelijke codes.’ Zie proefschrift: http://igitur-archive.library.uu.nl/dissertations/2011-0622-200255/nauta.pdf
